Task permission modes
Choose when Claude asks for approval, works automatically, or prepares a plan.
A task permission mode controls how Claude handles approval while it works in that task. Choose the mode when you create a Goal, or change it from the active chat toolbar.
Available modes
| Mode | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Ask | Claude asks before actions that need permission. | You want to review sensitive actions as the task runs. |
| Auto | Claude works independently, with background checks for unsafe actions. | You want less interruption while keeping native safety checks. |
| Full access | Claude runs without task-level asking or permission checks. | You trust the workspace and understand the task before it starts. |
| Plan | Claude creates a plan first, then waits for your approval. | You want to review the approach before execution. |
New Goals currently use Full access by default, unless the saved draft already uses another mode. Open the permission picker before Send if you want a different mode.
Where to choose a mode
The permission picker appears in two places in Feed:
- The toolbar at the bottom of New Goal.
- The message toolbar for an active Goal or subchat.
A completed task does not show the message toolbar. An archived Goal is read-only, so restore it before continuing the task.
The mode belongs to the task you are working in. Changing a subchat mode does not grant access to a different Goal or workspace.
Auto requirements
Auto requires:
- Claude Code CLI version 2.1.83 or later.
- A compatible model. A supported Sonnet or Opus model is the known path.
Command Centre disables Auto when it detects an older Claude Code version or a known incompatible model, such as Haiku or an older Claude model. The picker explains what must change. A custom or unknown model can remain selectable because Command Centre cannot confirm it in advance. Claude can still reject that setup when the task starts.
If Auto is unavailable, update Claude Code or select a supported Sonnet or Opus model. You can use Ask, Full access, or Plan while you resolve the requirement.
Change the mode during a task
You can change the mode while a task is active:
- Open the permission picker in the message toolbar.
- Select Ask, Auto, Full access, or Plan.
- Wait for Command Centre to confirm the change.
When a live Claude session is running, Command Centre sends the change to that session and saves it only after Claude confirms it. A successful live change does not need a task restart. When no live session is running, Command Centre saves the mode immediately and uses it for the next session.
If Claude rejects the live change, the previously saved mode remains active. If the connection is lost or confirmation times out, the previous mode stays saved and Command Centre stops the live session safely. It does not automatically send the current message again.
Selecting Ask, Auto, or Full access while the task is in Plan leaves Plan and starts using the selected mode.
Older tasks with Auto-edit
Some tasks created by an older Agentic OS version may show Auto-edit (legacy). This saved mode accepted file edits automatically, but commands could still ask for approval.
Auto-edit (legacy) is disabled in the current picker and is not a fifth mode. Select one of the four current modes to replace it.
What a task mode does not change
A task permission mode controls approval behavior inside Claude. It does not change:
- Your Team OS membership or role.
- Which client or skill grants the server gave you.
- The workspace assigned to the root Goal.
- The file paths that Command Centre allows or denies.
- Rules that block protected or unsupported actions.
For example, Full access removes Claude approval prompts for the task, but it does not give the task access to another Team, client, skill, or workspace. The Team OS server still checks the signed-in user, effective Team access, client access, and skill access before it allows a protected action.
See Roles and permissions for Team OS access rules, or return to Feed.
